Jai sighed, tucking his chin to his chest against the cold and tuning out the larger part of Nevan's latest round of scolding. As a feral near-teen he'd never been required to pay attention to anything for longer than it interested him, so as soon as it became clear that Nevan was just going to keep telling him off and that he wasn't going to get anything out of it since he had no intention of not stealing, and therefore dying, the boy simply paid attention to other things. As they walked a bedraggled pheasant hen had started following them and Jai laughed as she wove between his feet, almost tripping him up in the snow. He leant down quickly to scoop her up and she settled in his arms with a coo, one beady eye warily on Nevan's back but appreciative of the boy's warmth.
"I ain't killing someone else!" Jai objected, catching the very end of Nevan's lecture and frowning.
"I take a jacket, maybe some boots, every now'n'then. I see 'em walk outta the Tangle just as easy as they walked in. They carryin' bags 'n'everythin' and I take one thing." He glared at Nevan's back for a moment, thinking that obviously the older teen had never tried living like he did, and apparently had never seen a heavily loaded traveller either. His upset lasted mere seconds though, before he was chuckling again as the pheasant hen tucked her head under his arm and promptly fell asleep, letting out little cooing noises that almost sounded like purring. These kind of birds were less common companions than the song birds Jai spent most of his time with, but he liked how different she seemed to the twitchy littler birds.
"Can you show me later?" True to form Jai forgot his indignation and hurt very quickly, and was easily drawn into the topic of magic.
"When we get to your village? Do you live alone, or will other people be there?" Suddenly nervous, Jai stooped and released the pheasant, who darted off into the undergrowth with a high pitched squawk. He wasn't used to being around a lot of people and it hadn't occurred to him until now that Nevan might have family in his home.
