Arik nodded when Thrasius explained how his family worked, remembering that a good portion of kings and queens were actually already related so it wouldn’t have the absolute chaotic sprawl of family that Arik had. She supposed it did help with the line of succession although it sounded weird to her to not have a large distant family behind oneself. ”Th’ ones I am clos’ to are no’ my biologic’l fam’ly, no,” Arik said. She had told him this once before but as they were talking about it now so it seemed a good time to reiterate. ”I am of a side br’nch of m’ clan, yeah?” Arik said,
”Th’re are many, many differn’ branch’s of th’ Hakara tribe bu’ only th’ main family wi’l nee’ t’ be involv’d. Th’s is m’de of Eric, ‘is siblings, an’ the’r chil’ren.” The main family was kept exclusive, more than two or three lines of succession away from the current head of the family meant that you had to be filtered out, off the main estate and into joining one of the branch families or establishing a new one. Arik’s own branch of the family had been separated with her great-great grandmother but even over that amount of time she was still considered a subdivision, even if she was the only one of her name left.
She smiled at the answer to his next question, visibly relieved that she would have some choice in that matter. There were already a few people she could think of that she wanted to bring; like Char, a girl Arik had known for as long as she could recall and who would likely be indignant to the idea of not coming along. ”I think I shoul’ like t’ ‘ave m’ own maids, yeah?” Arik said. And guards too, although not terribly many people she could ask to do that came to mind. It was likely that Blue or Eric would find someone though, Blue because he cared for her and didn’t trust the royal family and Eric because the giving of family fortunes was common for weddings and he dealt primarily in slaves. Even so, Arik thought she would like to at least carve out a little niche to bring along some Boil natives, people who could speak her language whom she could consort with more freely and who would be just as uncertain of the Northern customs as Arik herself.
Maybe one of the maids should be a girl who was familiar with the north but could still speak the Boil language. A translator to help with the rest and who could break down northern customs in a way that would make sense to Arik and whoever else she brought along. Whatever she did, Arik was glad to hear that she would retain personal power to choose who she surrounded herself with.
”It woul’ be norm’l f’r y’u to go t’ see th’ head of my ‘ouse in his home an’ I to accompany y’u,” Arik explained, ”An’ it woul’ be normal f’r him t’ com’ h’re aft’r tha’, us’ally bef’re th’ wedding.” She didn’t know how her distant relative would react to being summoned and if they did go Arik would need to send Yuli ahead with a letter explaining who they were and what was happening since she doubted Eric even had an idea of who she was. ”Y’u c’n summon ‘im to h’re if y’u woul’ rather,” Arik said, although she doubted that a rich Boil slaver would be over the moon if he received orders to come to the castle regardless of the listed reason.
