Matthias was completely oblivious to the effect he had on Gwendolyn, and even if he had noticed it he wouldn’t have understood why she reacted to him the way she did. He did feel discomfort and an uncomfortable bite of shame when he withdrew, though, and he scuttled back on his feet a little. He didn’t like feeling so exposed, and the only comfort he could find was in the fact that it was Gwendolyn and not someone he actually cared about.
”I didn’t know I was going to get dragon blood. I have no idea what kind of outcomes you can get,” Matthias grumbled, still looking away from her face. ”Who knows what kind of powers you would get if you did change? Maybe you wouldn’t get dragon blood. And even if you ask specifically for dragon blood the god who comes to claim the sacrifice might not give it to you just to be spiteful.” Some gods were cruel, there were more gods that were cruel than were kind as Matthias well knew.
”There’s no reason to even think that the change would take; you could become one of the punished ones. Or die. A lot of people die. You could, y’know, help a lot more people if you aren’t dead.”
He curled his lips in disgust and his tail lashed. ”Besides, Rosalind heals people just fine the way she is,” he added with a faint snarl. Gwendolyn was her apprentice didn’t that mean she had to learn how to heal the way Rosalind did? Although . . .
Maybe if he helped her get this power she wouldn’t need to continue to be an apprentice to Rosalind anymore? Then she wouldn’t need to hang around Rosalind’s so much and Matthias could get her out of his life completely. He paused as he considered this silently, putting his hand to his chin and lowering his gaze a fraction so his mop of blond and white hair fell forward over his face. Yes, that could work. If she could heal anyone she wouldn’t need to be around Rosalind ever again!
He didn’t look at her again until she mentioned his family, then he tossed his head to make his hair fall back and glared at her with stormy gray eyes. He barred his teeth at her for a moment as another growl bubbled in his throat. He didn’t like talking about it and she seemed to want to dig at him. Even Derrek hadn’t been privy to the information she was picking at. His feelings over what had happened to him and his past, those were his and he would not share it with anyone. ”Leave it,” he warned. What he would do if she didn’t even Matthias didn’t know but he knew well that it wouldn’t be good.
