”Better a boy than someone’s pet Hound,” Matthias spat. Pattie and Greg, both creatures were highly attuned to Matthias’s emotions arched their back and roared in tune with his anger. There was a loud pop and a green lizard appeared, one that Matthias had named Bity although she hadn’t bonded to him as strongly as her blue and gold siblings. The green lizard flew in a few rapid circles over Matthias’s head before she came to land on the earth before Hers. Bity stamped her feet and spat out fire at the dog in warning. She was barely half his size since she was the smallest of all the Firelizards but she was bold and she had brought down elk with her wing before so she felt no fear.
Matthias made no comment on the third lizard’s sudden appearance but he didn’t avert his hard stare. ”Do you really think I would lead you to this dragon? I know these cliffs and I know how to shake a dog off my back.” His gaze flitted to Gwendolyn for a moment, in case she wasn’t aware that he didn’t consider her any better than Alistair. He could leave her behind as well; his agreement to lead her was by no means a guarantee.
The Hound caught his eye again when he put his hand on his sword, and Matthias’s own hand flew to the hilt of the sword poking from over his shoulder, and there was nothing subtle about the movement. Ignis wrapped its ribbon tight around Matthias’s forearm in preparation of being used. ”You haven’t even fought a dragon before, have you?” If he hadn’t then he wouldn’t know just how fast Matthias could heal, which was a distinct advantage if it came to a fight since Matthias had survived getting impaled and having his throat slit in the past.
When Gwendolyn stepped between them, Matthias loosened his grip on the flame sword for a moment and the silky ribbon seemed to slide down his arm a little, Ignis relaxing its own grip on him in a perfect reflection of his own action. But as Gwendolyn turned on him the faint glimmer of optimism that she had finally come to her senses faded and Matthias felt a spike of utter loathing that coiled across his expression for a moment. Before he even thought about the action Matthias’s hand show out and gripped Gwendolyn around the neck. His palm pressed into her throat and his long golden talons dug into the skin over her spine. The octopus tattooed over his hip suddenly started crawling across his body, swimming over his skin like it was water until it got to his arm where it coiled as close to his wrist as it could get. ”Are you stupid?” Matthias snarled. A few octopus arms started to peel out from his wrist, thickening and coloring until they resembled real tentacles, and they coiled down from Matthias’s wrist to brush Gwendolyn’s throat as well.
”Do you think I’m just going to go with whatever you decide like some halfwit child? Here’s an idea. How about you go find your own half dragon and ask him how to change instead?” Matthias snarled, entirely forgoing the idea of keeping his voice in an undertone. Most of the time he felt human still, even when he found himself growling or lashing his tail unintentionally but at the moment he didn’t feel at all human. He felt like a dragon barely contained in human flesh, like fire was burning in his bones and his rage felt righteous. ”And don’t you dare pity me,” Matthias snarled in a softer voice this time. He hadn’t missed the sad look she gave him and it made his skin crawl. His claws dug a little harder into Gwendolyn’s skin for a moment and he thought he might really strangle her before a windstorm came broiling down from the cliffs and Matthias tore his hand away and drew back quickly.
What was that? It wasn’t natural that was for sure and Matthias watched suspiciously as it turned into a great bird before she turned into a woman. Matthias pulled back a few paces as the strange new bird-woman started chattering at Gwendolyn. She must have been one of the gods, Matthias was starting to grow used to their appearances, strange though they might be.
He watched in silence as she gave her gift to Gwendolyn but he nearly recoiled in shock when she turned on him as well. Matthias blinked at her as she mentioned Derrek, saying that he was in his thoughts but Derrek was busy elsewhere . . . Matthias didn’t voice it but he was skeptical. Certainly being told that Derrek was just busy didn’t help the stab of abandonment that had been needling its way into his stomach. And why was she calling him his father? Matthias was pretty sure that Derrek couldn’t possibly have sired him; they had incompatible magic for starters. Still, it wouldn’t do to be rude and when she gave him her gifts he muttered, ”thanks.” He didn’t know what to do with the scale but he did take the sword and fastened the belt around his waist. He didn’t know that he would use it much when he had Ignis but it was nice anyway, he supposed.
He made a face when the goddess suggested he trust the stranger. He wasn’t a trusting person by nature and he never had been, though he didn’t expect the goddess thought a few parting words would get him on board with the Hound. ”Why do these bird women keep giving me swords?” He muttered under his breath, knitting his brow as he wondered about what he was expected to do with them.
