True Form
Jai's true form is a Superb Fairy Wren, a small songbird weighing approximately 10 grams and only 12cm in length from head to tail. He has an iridescent blue head with a black bib and mask, a white underbelly, wings that fade from bright golden-brown to a darker greyish brown, and a pale blue tail. Fairy wrens are active, restless birds which rarely sit still and often sing throughout the day. They are primarily insectivorous but will eat small amounts of seeds, flowers and fruit.
Human Form
Jai is a cheerful, scrawny twelve-year old boy, quick to smile and laugh though initially wary of strangers. He has dark brown eyes, light brown hair which is easily bleached by the sun in summer, and a light gold complexion which tans easily but may also burn. He often looks scruffy and in summer typically wears only shorts or pants, preferring to go shirtless and barefoot. In winter he feels the cold strongly and is more likely to bundle up in layers, typically whatever he can get his hands on. Often the fit and quality is poor, but as he is so active and careless he'd ruin even the nicest clothes quickly anyway. Because he eats sparsely and never stops moving he's skinny and has no muscle-tone, though he isn't usually undernourished - he simply has a light body type. The sign of his true form is the dark gold feathers scattered through his hair, with smaller feathers along his hairline that can only be seen when he pushes his fringe back.
Half-Form
In his half-form Jai has large wings, mostly with golden-brown plumage although the feathers closest to the wing joint are dark blue, fading out to lighter blues further along the wings. A few of the feathers along the wing joint are the eye-catching, iridescent blue of the head-feathers of his true form. He also retains hollow bones and is able to fly for short distances, although he isn't a strong flier and doesn't soar. Rather, he tends to use this to flutter from branch to branch, much like his true form would.
In his half-form Jai is still scrawny, restless and highly active. He also has permanent pale and dark reddish-brown markings on his skin, mostly over his arms, chest and ribs, perhaps as a throwback of the light underbelly and red-brown wing feathers of his true-form. In this form his hair is light blonde, his skin is a darker shade of gold, and his eyes are golden brown.

Personality
Naive
Jai is only twelve years old and he acts like it. Childish, innocent, naive and optimistic, he is in many ways a typical pre-adolescent boy. He's had little in the way of consistent, helpful adult influences since losing his parents at age five and it shows; he has had no education, academic or social, and wouldn't be described as mature for his age. His childish hopefulness is, however, quite endearing, though he can be easily tricked or manipulated. He is also virtually feral; he has no experience of the cities, has never been inside a building, has no knowledge of social etiquette and doesn't know how to read or write.
Friendly
Naturally gregarious and outgoing, despite the fact that he is intially wary of people simply out of a sense of self-preservation, Jai would first and foremost be described as friendly. He loves many animals but particularly songbirds and almost always has at least a few following him around, thanks to his magic. He also loves meeting new people, especially other youngsters, and makes friends easily. Jai is non-judgmental, warm and very talkative.
Fun-Loving
Having grown up with very little structure in his life, Jai loves games and having fun above all else. He has a short attention span but is enthusiastic about everything from ball games to tag to exploring. He loves the idea of travel, though has rarely left the Tangle in practice, and can be easily enticed into participating in an adventure. He has little first-hand experience of violence and would be alarmed and upset by it if exposed, whether it was towards animals or other humanoids.
Wildly Energetic
Put simply, Jai is a livewire. Like the songbird that is his true form he basically never stops moving. Nothing holds his attention for very long unless it's extremely interesting and varied, and he's never had to sit still for long periods so is completely unable to do so. He's restless, loves running and physical play, and adores climbing trees - he is more commonly found in the canopy of the Tangle than on the ground. He gets over-excited easily and is terribly fidgety.
Insecure
Because he's spent more time around birds than other humanoids, and because he can be full-on, the few people Jai has met have either found him endearing and sweet or insufferably annoying. He is sensitive to criticism from this second group and, when sad, can be affected by this emotion for days. There isn't a bad bone in his body so he has little understanding of evil, darkness or cruelty, and when these come into contact with him they can leave him bewildered and downtrodden.

History
Jai's parents, both of them also Fairy Wren avians, were killed by predators when he was five years old - using the common technique of their bird forms to lure predators away from a nest with young in it. He doesn't remember them clearly, though, and despite this early misfortune is a cheerful and optimistic child. Jai has lived his whole life in a stand of poplar trees on the edge of the clearing by Crystal Lake, in the Northern Tangle. He has a small, roughly-built tree house in one of the largest poplars (originally built by his father), high enough up to protect him from land-dwelling predators. Inside he has a small nest of blankets, most of them stolen from unwary travellers over the years, a stash of mismatched and ragged clothing, a single pair of leather boots, and the odd trinket collected from the Tangle over the years.
Jai frequently explores the Tangle and, despite it being known as a dangerous place, is comfortable there and feels safe most of the time. He has never left the Tangle or ventured anywhere near the cities though. He lives alone except for the birds that inhabit his poplar stand and keep him company, though he frequently tails travellers through the Tangle and, if they seem interesting and not too dangerous, may speak to them and spend time with them if they allow it. He's completely self-sufficient, although winter can be a difficult time, and he longs for adventure but has never been brave enough to leave the Tangle - nor has he met someone willing to take him yet.

Roleplay Sample
It had taken him hours and hours to smooth the broken branch of a beech tree into a flattish board. The end result was extremely rough, still rounded on one side and crooked because the branch had been, but lacking any proper tools, knowledge and discipline, it was the best the young werebeast could do. He was now struggling with his plank of wood halfway up a poplar tree, balanced with one foot on each of two branches and the plank jammed precariously under one arm. Determinedly, though, the boy hauled his board inch by inch up the tree, until he was nearly thirty metres up and at his destination.
Panting with the effort of climbing with a heavy load, though it was something he did almost effortlessly when not carrying a dead-weight branch, Jai tumbled through the door of his treehouse and dumped the branch on the floor. It was to replace a board that had rotted in the ceiling and was now letting the rain through, but rather than start replacing it immediately the boy collapsed onto his pile of blankets and waited to catch his breath. Perched on a branch right outside the door two black starlings watched him with bright, dark, curious eyes and he sat up to smile at them. This pair were regular visitors to his treehut and as he held out his hand they alighted on it gently, chirruping meaningless words at him.
"Hello there. Have you come to help me fix my house?" Grinning Jai scrambled to his feet, breathlessness forgotten, and the birds perched on his shoulder while he started manhandling the board into place.
