Zygesh was a small village made up of barely one hundred people, mostly a wide assortment of poor humans and freed shifter, in a collection of ramshackle stone and straw houses that were set together so tightly Matthias expected most of them were only able to stand thanks to the support of their neighbors. The village itself was in a narrow cove that seemed to have better weather than the rest of the forest and sea surrounding it, which was the main reason why Matthias had been attracted to this village in the first place. It had only been a convenient happenstance that it happened to be a fishing village as well, and the gold, blue, and green fire-lizards that usually adored either shoulder and the top of his head had taken off to go sneak bits of discarded chum that had been spilt across the docks and the gold appeared to have set fire to someone’s sail.
Matthias himself was trying to ignore the trio in the vague hope that he wouldn’t get in trouble for the mess they were making. Not that it was very hard; the fire lizards were putting their teleportation powers to good use and were easily avoiding being caught so Matthias was able to go about doing his own thing without worrying about one of them getting hurt or captured.
The skinny half dragon teen wasn’t dressed nearly warm enough for the weather, and despite his super-heated blood he still felt a chill that prompted him to keep his hood up and he wrapped himself in his thin blue cloak so he could pull his tail in closer to his legs. Aside from the cloak, Matthias had wrapped up his feet in long strips of leather, begrudging about his inability to fit his giant claws into fluffy boots, and a pair of ugly beige pants synched over his hips with a thick strip of red cloth. He had been wearing a warm brown tunic up until he had needed to use his wings and grown them without bothering to take if off first. Then when his wings dissolved away again his tunic hadn’t been able to keep up leaving him unfortunately bare-chested and shivering.
Anoki, who was now the size of a very large python with cumbersome wings, was wrapped around his stomach under his cloak and the Quetzalcoatl had stuck his head out of the hood, under Matthias’s chin and watched everyone they passed by with an interest that made Matthias somewhat wary as to if the snake was starting to think eating people was a good idea. Hopefully fish would still be fine though, since for once Matthias had a couple coins on him and that should be enough to cover food for himself and Anoki.
The half dragon made his way along the docks, ignoring the fire lizards still wheeling around in the stormy gray sky and spitting delighted fireballs at the heads of anyone who tried to grab them, unaware that they were in trouble and not that everything was just grand. He skirted around barrel-chested fishermen and sour faced teens untangling nets, several of whom glowered at Matthias for his apparent lack of supervision but then they were wearing woolen shirts and boots so Matthias thought they could probably split the difference on that one.
He kept ducking close to the stalls set up in front of the much more impressive boats (which weren’t actually terribly impressive, merely the first boats Matthias had seen in his life) but every time Matthias got too close he would either be shooed off by someone thinking he was a shifter child looking to steal something or they were selling shellfish, which Matthias didn’t actually care for. The whole thing was aggravating and it barely took fifteen minutes before the white-and-blonde half dragon was wondering about how good his chances trying to steal something might be.
