The Forest of the Fae had always been a strange place; a sense of surreal abnormality pulsated through the forest and made any outsider that dared to enter without the consent of the Fae feel chilled and unwelcome. The already brilliantly colored flora of the forest had started to stain into even wilder colors by the encroaching chill of autumn and bathed under the light of a half-moon the forest seemed completely unnatural.
And, despite how strange adults usually found their first time in the forest, the two fox kits that tore through the underbrush hardly seemed to mind the constant sense of wrongness that throbbed in the air around them.
The two fox kits were more intent on their playing as they ran between thick trees and under thorny bushes, completely oblivious to the way the forest swirled curiously around them. The little kit was running much faster than the larger one, and he turned to yip at her over his shoulder just as the larger kit sprang, landing heavily between the smaller one’s shoulder and sending them both sprawling and yelping into the roots of a tree. The larger one flipped her brother onto his back and sat on him, pinning him under with her heavy paws. The little fox squirmed and howled, trying to kick her off but only managing to paw at the tip of her tail. With an indignant squeak the little fox shifted into a small naked boy with brilliant red hair.
”Hey! That’s cheating, you promised no sitting!” He yelled before he grabbed one of the large kit’s ears and yanked it hard.
”Ow!” Rho yelped as she shifted into her human form as well. The little girl curled her hand into a fist and slammed it down on her brother’s chest making him gasp for breath and he shifted back suddenly and nipped her wrist before wriggling free of his sister and tearing through the forest once more. ”YOU’RE THE CHEATER!” Rho yelled after him at the top of her lungs before she shifted back and howled, that cry echoing much further through the woods than her human shout.
Rho took off again, following the trail set by her brother. He had kicked up wet leaves and lefts claw marks in the soft mud, and Rho ran with her head ducked, occasionally glancing up to make sure she didn’t run headfirst into a tree. Gaios was faster than her, though, and Rho soon came to a pile of rocks he had run through. Instead of running over them, Rho decided to follow her brother’s path and she crouched low on her paws, squirming through the tight little tunnel formed by the stones. All was well until the little vixen got to her hips when she found she was too big to go any further through. Rho growled and started to back up, when she found that her ribs were too wide at the base for her to push through going back. Trying to stand didn’t work since the rock over her was too heavy and Rho lashed her tail nervously as her ears flattened against her head. Could she shift? Maybe she would be big enough that the rocks would move apart just from the change? Rho didn’t really want to risk it.
Instead, the little fox turned up her head and started to yelp and whine, desperately hoping that Gaios would still be close enough to hear her and come running back. Otherwise she would have to wait until he realized she wasn’t on his heels and came to look for her and that might take hours.
