Wandering brazenly up to a dragon under the assumption it was a shifter, and a shifter that Matthias knew, had not been the half-dragon’s best move. In the middle of the night he had mistaken the dragon clawing over the cliffs and he had cried out to it. It wasn’t until it turned on him and spat out a jet of boiling water at him that Matthias realized he had made a terrible mistake. On his own he couldn’t take on a full grown dragon and Matthias had taken flight and left the cliffs as quickly as physically possible to escape the dragon before it decided to eat him.
Matthias had flown all the way through the night until his wings and shoulders ached and he was gliding so long his tail dragged over the tall grass of the savannah. As the sky turned gray with streaks of dawn Matthias finally crashed to the ground. His claws cut deep into the earth as he rolled and he left a wide swath of broken grass before he came to a stop on his back. Matthias stared at the gray sky for a long while after he landed. His wings and tail were coiled under him uncomfortably and his muscles ached despite the healing draconic blood in his veins. Anoki, the twenty foot Quetzalcoatl he had befriended years ago had kept pace with him as he fled and had settled down around and over him when he fell, and Matthias couldn’t scrounge up enough energy to shove his head off his chest.
The fire lizards took a little longer to arrive since they hadn’t been able to keep up with the flight. The two tiny dragons appeared with tiny cracks and started screaming angrily at him for his abandonment and that was more than enough to get Matthias up.
”Yeah, yeah, sorry,” he groaned as he sat up. Pattie squawked at him and the little gold came to perch on the top of his head, grabbing tiny fistfuls of hair while her blue brother continued to fly in disgruntled circles overhead. Matthias rubbed his eyes with his palms before he drew up his knees and looked up at the skin. He was exhausted but dawn was already broken and the sun was already cresting above the horizon as a brilliant smudge of yellow. With a groan Matthias climbed to his claws and dusted off the seat of his blue pants and both of his swords where they had pressed into the soil. Matthias thought it was unfortunate he had landed among dry grass and frozen ground instead of a softer patch of snow but the aches from his crash would soon subside.
Matthias raised his head and sniffed the air. His sense of smell was enhanced by his draconic powers and he sought out the faint smells of campfire and cooking. Any travelers in these parts would still be asleep and Matthias was fully intending to look for some sap he could steal food from without hunting for it himself. Thoughts like ‘that’s morally object-able’ or ‘I shouldn’t steal’ didn’t enter into his equation. He was hungry and Matthias was going to find food enough for himself and his companions, all of whom were trailing in his wake as the lean young man took off across the savannah.
