The Shadow World- the place where the Shadows go in their sleep, and after death.
The Shadow World exists as something of a magical plane. It is not connected to Litharia, and occupies its own physical space.
Its history is obscured. Some of its past is evident in the city ruins that can be found in the thick mist, but what exactly reduced it to such a state remains up for debate.
A Shadow exists simultaneously in both planes, but can only be conscious of one at a time. While awake, the Shadow will find themselves in the real world, missing whatever it is they are missing there. During this time, the Shadow's body remains in the Shadow World, as an insubstantial, half-transparent form of themselves.
When a Shadow sleeps in the real world, they remain there physically, but also return completely to the Shadow World, where they have whatever trait it is they lack in the real world.
There are residents of the Shadow World who do not have an existent body in the real world. This includes Shadows who have died, and Shadows who formed exclusively in the Shadow world for whatever reason. These Shadows do not sleep, because their consciousness never leaves the Shadow world.
Monsters aren't an uncommon sight, and while 'death' as such isn't a problem in the Shadow World, some are capable of devouring weaker beings, thereby causing a similar problem. There are techniques to bind these monsters, and monster hunting is a frequent activity among the Shadows.
The magic of the Shadow World is incomparable to the magic of Litharia. On the plus side, due to its roots in ritual, it is possible to do just about anything with the right resources. On the down side, nobody has innate magic in the Shadow World, and any magic must be researched ahead of time.
As in the real world, there is no form of organization among the Shadows. They do not understand government. loyalty, or dominance any better in the Shadow World than in the real world.
Most Shadows are wanderers and scavengers, exploring the ruins of their past at will.
Food is not a necessity in the Shadow World, nor is there much edible-substance to come by in the first place. Meat doesn't exist due to the lack of proper 'death'.
The weather will always be overcast and foggy in the Shadow World. At night, the 'stars' come out in the form of bright lights which drift through the mist at will. Daytime is brighter, and the outline of the sun can sometimes be seen by those with a keen eye.
When in the real world, the Shadow maintains at best a 90% memory of what has happened to them in the Shadow World. While in the Shadow world, there is no such memory impediment, although some may occasionally have trouble organizing memories made during their time in the real world.
Those with an affinity for Death and Dark magics may be able to learn an ability to let them visit the Shadow World. These visitors will find that they are missing something in the Shadow World, in the same way that Shadows miss something in theirs. If they are devoured or bound by something or somebody, they may find that they cannot return to their bodies in the real world. These bodies will remain comatose until such a time as the owner can escape, if they ever manage to.
