Above: A calm night in the marshes.
Why would anyone visit the Westward Marshes? Simple; one has to traverse through them to get to (or from) the Daemon Tunnels. Other than that? Stay away! The only living creatures one will find in the gloomy marshland are the lost traveler, wandering daemon, desperate fugitive, and occasional daemon hermit. Be wary of these hermits! Their minds have often been twisted by the air they breathe.
The marshland is always foggy and always dark. Perhaps that is why the daemon have adapted to it so well. The land is riddled with quicksand, a foe that often proves to be worse than any wild beast due to its impartiality. Never travel through the Westward Marshes without a guide (unless you are that guide!). If you do, at least be sensible enough to bring a nice long walking stick so that you may test the ground before you.
Quicksand aside, there are other strange things lurking in the mist. Many travelers have reported seeing small bursts of light floating through the marshland. These lights have been called wisps and, while beautiful, are considered extremely dangerous. They do not do anything but float around. The problem is, they hypnotize the mind. People are drawn towards them like a moth to a candle flame. And then they die. See, the wisps are attracted to quicksand. Following one is a bad idea, but ultimately inevitable once you make eye contact.
Quicksand, wisps, insane hermits, and gloomy fog? That sounds terrible! But there is, alas, more. Something even more frightening. Odd illusions, visions of the dead, float in the water and wail into the wind. Travelers have reported coming face to face with their lost relatives. These visions will not acknowledge your presence, not unless you are dying. Reports say that they are drawn to life’s last few breaths…
