Matthias had wings now, two huge draconic wings that had been gifted by a goddess connected to a small dragon skull that he wore around his neck, by a length of twine strung through the eye sockets. He had gotten the hang of making them appear and vanish on a whim. It still hurt, when they grew they ripped out from his skin and when he put them away there was a rather unpleasant feeling of them dissolving back into his flesh. Although curiously enough even when they were put away Matthias now has two stripes of blue scales down his back from where they sprouted that wouldn’t go away. But the pain was at least brief, and it hadn’t taken much more time after he got the hang of growing them before Matthias could move them around as easily as he could move his legs. Which meant that he now needed to learn how to use them to fly.
He had gone to the Tangle, deep into the woods where he didn’t think anyone would spot him with Anoki and his two firelizards fluttering after him. He had walked around until he found a very tall, easily climbable tree and he scaled it quickly, his thick gold talons digging deep into the bark until he got up as high as he could manage without the branches breaking under him. As it was the branches swayed under him but didn’t give out, no thanks to the gold lizard Pattie who fluttered around his head and scolded him, trying to coax him into climbing back down. Her panic only increased when she saw Matthias spreading his own wings carefully, and Matthias was sure that her shrieks could have been heard for miles.
The young half dragon inched out along the bough, moving on all fours like a cat, slow and careful as he kept staring straight down, trying to figure out the best place he could try to launch from. In the end he just crawled out as far as he could go before the branch sounded like it was about to break before deciding to take off. Matthias glanced around, shifting his weight and wiggling his hips for a second and spreading his wings as far as he could. For a few seconds he was still before Matthias took a deep breath and launched himself into the air.
His wings were open, and Matthias kept them far apart in an attempt to glide with his limbs and tail streamlined. And for a moment, it worked. But there was only so much staying still could do before Matthias pitched to the side. For a moment, he flapped his wings wildly and lashed his tail before he fell, completely unable to stop himself as he crashed down through the lower branches of the tree then hit the ground like a brick.
Pattie let out a mournful wail, and dove after him, landing neatly on the ground next to him and head-butting him gently as she tried to rouse him. The other lizard, the smaller blue Greg, landed on the branch above him, cocking his head and letting out a faint creel. And most infuriatingly, Anoki burst out into hissy, chirpy laughter.
Matthias groaned and curled up for a second, squeezing his eyes shut for a second as he tried to catch his breath. That hurt. But it was hard to ignore the worried fire lizards and after a moment Matthias mumbled, ”its okay, I’m fine.” He slowly uncurled himself and lifted his head out from under his wing before he slowly pulled himself up into a sitting position with his back against the tree trunk. He hadn’t been wearing a shirt when he climbed the tree, so nothing would get in the way of his wings (although he was wearing pants) so most of the damage was plainly visible. A few ribs had been crunched, and bruises stained his skin under his tattoos. His chest and wings were heavily decorated with scratches, many of which were still filled with splinters. Those wounds were minor, though, and Matthias could feel his body heating up as his blood started healing everything at once. There was one thing that wasn’t healing, however, and that was a splinter nearly a foot long impaling him right through one of his kidneys, part of his liver, and poked out through his back. Matthias could feel his meat trying to heal but it was impossible with the splinter was still inside him.
”Oh shut up,” Matthias snapped at Anoki, who was still chuckling loudly, although he was more tolerant of the worry from the lizards. ”Shh, Pattie, it’s okay,” he said softly as he worked his shoulders against his the trunk, sitting up straighter and wrapping his hand around the end of the giant splinter. It throbbed and ached and Matthias bit his lip before he yanked it out of him roughly. He let out an agonized scream, one that set Pattie wheeling around and chirping frantically as the wound in his gut sealed itself up, leaving only trails of blood over his pale skin and the bloody bit of wood in his hand as the only evidence he had ever been even remotely injured to begin with.
