1. To speak or not to speak?
A) Think about what you say before you say it. Around the internet, you are going to meet people who are vastly different from you in terms of culture and belief. Keep that in mind before putting your foot in your mouth. Ask yourself if the words you’re about to say might come off as potentially offensive. If so, revise them. If you are unsure how, perhaps it would be best to sit this particular conversation out.
B) Some people are more sensitive than others. Keep that in mind before making a comment that pokes fun at another member. You’ll have to use your best judgment here and always apologize if your joke was not taken the way it was meant. Try to refrain from making jokes about a person’s race or religion. If you’re unsure, ask people if they are offended by certain things before posting them.
C) Litharia should be a supportive environment. Always abstain from making comments that are callous. You are not required to feel empathetic towards the other members, but kindly hold back any negative comments regarding subjects that may hurt another member. If you don’t care or are uninterested, do not join in the discussion. If you really want to talk, talk about something else.
D) The chat box is uncensored. I am not interested in heavily monitoring the sorts of conversations you have. Please use common sense. Things like race, religion, politics, and other items are extremely sensitive. Be aware of the other members and make sure you are not making them uncomfortable with your opinions.
2. So who is eating the trolls?
A) It is a staff member’s job to keep the peace. If they sense that the conversation is leading somewhere uncomfortable, then they are allowed to take steps to ensure that it does not get that far. A staff member should start by asking for a change in topic. Members would do well to listen to this suggestion. At that point it is not a matter of right and wrong and no warning will be issued.
B) If the topic is one of debate, then the staff member may suggest moving it to the Friendly Debate board. That is what the board is for, after all. Keep in mind that at this point the conversation should either be over or moved to the appropriate board. If a member is resisting the staff member’s suggestions, then the staff member may file a formal complaint against that member and a warning may be issued.
C) Should a member become too unruly and openly argue with a staff member, then that staff member may kick them out of the chat and remove all OOC privileges for the night. This is intended to allow the heated member a chance to cool down and is not meant to be taken as punishment. If the member does not listen to the staff member and continues to post OOC, the matter will be taken very seriously.
D) A staff member has the authority and power to do all of the above without being questioned or argued with. That being said, it is part of a staff member’s duty to stay calm and to treat everyone with respect. If a staff member feels that they are losing their temper or that they are taking the matter personally or are otherwise incapable of reacting in a calm, unbiased manner, then they should hand the situation over to another staff member when possible.
3. How do I slay the beast?
A) You don’t. Dealing with problem members is a job for the staff. If someone is making you uncomfortable, you may start by calmly pointing out that you are hurt, uncomfortable, or offended by what is being said. This may require an explanation of why you are feeling the way you do. Once an explanation has been given, the offending member should stop. If so, no warning will be issued.
B) If the offending member persists, begin to draft a formal complaint. Take screen shots if you are able. If not, copy and paste the conversation. Make sure to include the part where you explained how you felt and why you felt that way. PM your formal complaint along with your evidence to any admin. The matter will then be dealt with by them. Formal complaints typically take a week to process.
C) At this time, you should politely disengage yourself from conversation with the offending member. Anything you say out of anger can make you just as guilty as it further instigates the problem. You have already explained yourself and asked the other to stop. The other refused. What more can you say that will help the situation? A complaint has (hopefully) been sent. We will handle the rest.
D) The moral of the story? Keep a civil tongue, don’t be afraid to come to us with your problem, and keep yourself out of the crossfire. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. You can be sure that we will handle the matter. It is important to us that Litharia offers its members a warm, happy, and drama free environment. Our entire staff is committed to working for that. We got your back.
4. But doesn’t power breed corruption?
A) If you feel that you are being unfairly treated by a staff member, begin with a PM. Do not argue with the staff member. Nod, smile, and do what the staff member says for now. Your PM should be polite and inquiring. Do not make accusations. Instead, let the staff member know how you are feeling and explain why you are feeling that way. It is possible that the staff member had no idea you were feeling the way you were.
B) If you are too upset by something the staff member did to write a polite PM then you have two options. You can either pause, take a breath, and allow yourself some cool down time or you can explain your grievances to an admin. You could even do both. The admin will most likely talk to that staff member to find out what the story is. Hopefully the matter will be settled then.
C) If the staff member responds harshly to your PM or if the staff member continues to treat you poorly, take screen shots or copy and paste conversations so that you may draft a formal complaint.. Make sure to include your original PM to the staff member within your complaint so that we can see that you followed step A or B.
D) Never argue or attack a staff member. Power abuse is considered a serious staff offense within Litharia, but if you argue or attack the staff member then you become part of the problem. Do not instigate a fight. Instead, follow the above steps and allow us to take care of the matter for you. If you don’t, you might find yourself in just as much trouble as the person you are accusing.
