In the beginning there was Black Matter and there was White Matter. For an eternity they fought and struggled with each other, both equally as strong and equally as large. Then the Black Matter grew frustrated. “Why do we fight?” she exclaimed, “We could be so much more if we worked together!” And so the Black Matter embraced the White Matter, and God was born.
At first, God was furious at Black Matter for putting him in that form. Then he realized his power was condensed. It was stronger. He forgave Black Matter and repaid her embrace, bringing form to the Goddess. They were the perfect balance. She was chaos to his order, cold to his heat, dark to his light, mother to his father.
Together they gave birth to Sekme, who created the skies. Next they gave birth to Emareth, who created the earth. Witavir was born next, and he created the waters. Finally, came Fayree. She brought forth fire. The four deities lived in the realm of their parents, The Realm of the Gods. Their creation existed on a plane below them and they called it Litharia.
Sekme wed Emareth and together they gave birth to Biodenae and Dalyknos. Biodenae created the creatures of Litharia in order to help Emareth care for the land. Dalyknos brought down the shadows from her realm and created darkness. Now it was always night and the creatures of Litharia hunted in darkness. And so there were two more deities to watch over the land.
Witavir wed Fayree and together they gave birth to Lemgarit and Sezorel. Lemgarit separated the darkness from the light, so that there was night and day. Then Emareth’s earth could truly prosper. Sezorel breathed life into the creatures, giving them souls and the ability to have free thought. He gave life to everything that they created, and thus the fae were born.
Dalyknos and Lemgarit wed and gave birth to Reikuani, Seree, and Reimee. Reikuani introduced death to Litharia. Reimee introduced birth. Seree watched over the land, making sure balance was kept and the land continued to prosper. The fae called her Fate. Some called her Whore. Others simply called her Lady. Seree became the primary caretaker of Litharia.
Biodenae wed Sezorel and gave birth to Illusen, Tataryn, and Ortalisen. Illusen created the power of illusions. Ortalisen became the god of conflict. Tataryn became the god of temptation. It was Tataryn who eventually seduced Seree, turning her from gracious watcher to capricious interloper. The two are helplessly in love but doomed to fight for control so long as they are in the presence of the other.
And so it came to be that God and Goddess watched over the Realm of the Gods. Seree and Tataryn watched over Litharia. Sezorel and Biodenae governed the Land of the Dead. Witavir and Fayree were given the Dream Land, the land of daemons. It should be noted here that not much is known of the Dream Land or how it came to be due to the Daemons lack of written records.
The important part at this stage is that Litharia flourished. It was inhabited by the beasts and by the fae and the balance stayed in tact. The fae split into two courts; the Seelie and the Unseelie. The former governed springtime and summer while the latter ruled over autumn and winter. They did not get along, but they existed for many thousands of years.
And then war broke out. Rising tension between the courts sparked when a Seelie noble went missing. The War of the Fae was long, terrible, and gruesome. Many were killed. Some species were wiped out entirely. It lasted three thousand years. Three thousand years of life where nothing and no one was safe. The forest echoed with screams and dripped with blood.
Finally, a single fairy rose up and began a two hundred year search for peace. Gaining allies and support from fae on all sides, this fairy managed to contract a peace treaty and form the High Council. She was the very first fairy princess to rule over the fae. Now the Seelie and Unseelie are nonexistent in all but title. The fae are a united people.
It would be another thousand years before anything would disrupt the balance again. A single fairy attempted to practice an extremely advanced form of magic and ended up opening a porthole to the Dream Land. The fairy died and daemons poured through the hole, infecting Litharia with their presence. The chaos of Dream Land met the wildness of Litharia.
Upon entering Litheria, the once immortal daemons lost their immortality and began to age. They now had a lifespan that lasted eight hundred years. With help from the fae, the daemons learned how to adapt. So long as they left their hosts alone, the fae gave them the same courtesy. Balance returned. Minor spats between the species existed, but as a whole everything was peaceful.
Long after the original daemons had died out, something new came to Litharia. Strange creatures who could completely change their forms. Shapeshifters. When asked, all they knew about their origins was that they “came from the great beyond, a land far, far, away.” The fae were fascinated by the creatures and welcomed them to their home as well.
Time passed. The daemons had integrated themselves into Litharia so well that it seemed as though they were a part of it. The shifters made villages and laid claim to a small volcanic island off the southern coast of Litharia. Having never needed the island, the fae let them have it. There was a golden age of peace. The three species had much to share and much to learn from each other.
The golden age was shattered by the arrival of the humans. They came in a boat from a place called Torvor. Like they had the other species, the fae welcomed the humans to their land. At first, the humans were kind and interested in sharing knowledge with the fae. As barbaric as the strangers were, the fae believed they could be tamed.
It was not to be. The humans proved to be too greedy. First, they started killing the forest to build their cities. Next, they killed the beasts not for food but for decoration and sport. Then they began killing the fae themselves in a successful attempt at harnessing their magic. What followed was true chaos, which suited the daemons just fine.
The fae fought for the forest. Humans fought for control. Daemons fought for no one, though they did occasionally join in for their own undisclosed reasons. Due to the humans lack of trust, they mostly fought on the side of the fae. The shapeshifters fought for the hand that fed them…Which happened to be the humans.
This was the downfall of the shapeshifters. The humans, who discovered how to enslave them, used them and disrespected them. The fae learned not to trust them. And so, the shifters became nothings. They were less than the dirt itself. As time went on, they learned to either keep their distance or integrate themselves as best as they could into human society.
This brings us to modern day Litharia. Humans are taught to fear the fae and to kill them on sight. Fae are taught much the same. The daemons have quietly adapted. Indeed, some even get the feeling that they prefer this war torn land. The shapeshifters…well, they’re surviving. These are dark times for Litharia. Villains are rising while heroes lay dead.
