The cold water lapped at Rho’s paws as she ran lightly through the shallows of the bay. Wet sand was smeared across her fur and the green ribbon she usually wore in her hair in her human form had been tied loosely around her throat, and the long strands of woven silk were soaked in salt water as she looped easily along. Rho barked happily at the waves as they crashed in and out and she snapped at the helpless looking sea creatures as they swirled through the water.
The young shifter was alone, she had come to the beaches that ran along the cliffs with her brother, since they very rarely got the chance to see the sea and wanted to play now that it was warming up. However, in their true forms Rho was the faster runner and stronger swimmer so just trying to keep up with her had worn Gaios out and the smaller fox shifter had decided to curl up and sleep before the day was even half spent. He had said it would just be for a quick nap but twenty minutes in and Rho had already grown bored waiting for her brother to wake up once more.
He was curled up in the shadow of the cliffs, far away from the sea and Rho had considered trying to bury him in sand before she decided that the fastest way to wake him up would be to catch lunch, which was why she had started to charge through the surf to chase fish. Even so, she wasn’t very good at catching fish and with a growl she backed out of the water. The tall fox kit backed away so the tide couldn’t reach her and she looked around until she spied a few rocks that filtered water between them. There! That would be perfect!
Rho ran to the rocks and leapt atop them. They were flat on the top, polished black with a porous texture beaten from years of sea water. Rho sniffed at the rocks and licked the salt water off her chops before she positioned herself between the two rocks, angling her head so her muzzle was just brushing the surf as it rushed between the rocks. Water was forced into a violent channel there, and anything that was sucked into the current between the rocks was forced to go in and out with the tide, leaving it venerable to Rho’s waiting maws. And at last! There was a flurry of bright skin thrashing against the water as it was sucked into the violent current and Rho lashed down. It was some kind of sea-snake, Rho thought. It was a slimy sort of creature, brightly colored and Rho had no name for it but it thrashed as Rho sank her fangs into the base of its neck and tugged the thing onto the rock she stood on.
